Classic Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3
History
The Smith & Wesson Model 3 family of revolvers was immensely successful, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of American firearms. It was the brand's first revolver designed to fire powerful .44 caliber metallic cartridges—specifically the black-powder .44 Russian. Manufactured between 1878 and 1912, the Smith & Wesson No. 3 offered numerous advantages: its impressive caliber, reliable metallic ammunition, and a top-break mechanism that allowed for quick, efficient reloading—a major innovation for the time. The New Model No. 3 represents a modern evolution of the original, featuring cleaner lines and improved ergonomics. Produced in several variations, approximately 35,000 units were manufactured between 1874 and 1878. Today, the New Model No. 3 is highly sought after by collectors and appreciated by shooters passionate about the firearms of the American Old West. It perfectly embodies the spirit of that era, used by both the lawmen—sheriffs, marshals, and Texas Rangers—and the outlaws who forged the legend of the American West.
