History
The Colt Model 1900 Automatic Pistol is a fascinating piece of firearms history. Introduced at the turn of the 20th century, it was one of the first semi-automatic pistols to achieve widespread acceptance. Designed by John Browning, the Colt 1900 Automatic Pistol is notable for its innovative design and slide-lock mechanism. Production began in 1900 and continued until 1902, with approximately 4,274 units produced. This pistol was ahead of its time, featuring characteristics such as its .38 ACP caliber ammunition, manual safety, and detachable magazine—elements that have become standard in modern firearms. This model is the predecessor of the Colt 1902 and the iconic Colt 1911, still in military service today.
Our Model
This example of the Colt Model 1900 collector's pistol is a particularly desirable early production model. According to the book *The Government Models*, its production dates back to May 1900.
The weapon is in excellent original condition, with numerous remnants of the original bluing and no signs of oxidation. Its early serial number, 1XX, clearly visible, confirms a 1900 manufacture date. This number is also stamped on both halves of the frame, attesting to a matching set, an essential criterion for collectors of historical firearms. The Colt address and patent markings, located on either side of the barrel, are clearly visible, with slight wear in the friction areas. The finely engraved foal logo remains perfectly identifiable. The wooden grips, in excellent condition, are original to the model and perfectly fitted.
The action is in perfect working order. The .38 ACP caliber barrel, with its near-mirror bore, displays crisp, clean rifling, a guarantee of accuracy. The safety has been replaced with its factory Colt conversion, a known improvement designed to enhance reliability. The magazine is a true Colt 1900 model and bears the 1884 patent, characteristic of early production.
This Colt 1900 pistol is presented in a period wooden box, matching the Simmons distributor's model. The lower part of the box, previously modified and then partially torn off, has been restored with a paper label to improve its presentation.
Firearm sold with its classification certificate – Category D(e) historical firearm issued by the National Proof House of Saint-Étienne.
