Colt Army Model 1860 – 1862 Military Model

Manufactured: 1862 – Caliber: .44 – Original condition

Colt Army Model 1860 manufactured in 1862, military configuration and preserved in its original condition, an iconic .44 black powder collector's revolver from the American Civil War.

History

The Colt Army Model 1860, a .44 caliber black powder revolver, was produced in more than 200,000 examples. Its use expanded considerably during the American Civil War, with the U.S. Army alone acquiring more than 127,000 revolvers. The model was also used by cavalrymen on both sides of the conflict.

Before the introduction of the Colt Single Action Army in 1873, the Model 1860 was also one of the iconic revolvers of the American Frontier. Military models are distinguished in particular by the frame cut designed to allow the fitting of an optional shoulder stock. Civil War examples retaining their original military characteristics and inspection markings are particularly interesting to collectors.

Our Model

This Colt Army Model 1860, manufactured in 1862, remains in original, untouched condition. The metal surfaces have developed a dark tobacco-colored patina. The barrel address, frame patent markings and various period military inspection marks remain clearly visible.

Serial number 37XXX is present on the principal components of the revolver — frame, barrel, cylinder and trigger guard — making this a matching-numbered example. This is a military configuration featuring the characteristic frame cut designed for the fitting of an optional shoulder stock. The walnut stock is original and displays marks consistent with its previous use. It still retains the military inspector's cartouche on the left side, confirming its inspection for military service.

Mechanically, the revolver is in excellent working condition, with smooth cocking, a clean trigger pull, precise indexing, minimal cylinder play and no perceptible barrel-to-cylinder gap. The percussion nipples remain in good condition. The 8-inch .44 caliber barrel has a clear bore with deep rifling, showing only light signs of use.

This 1862 Colt Army Model 1860, in military configuration and with matching numbers, represents an interesting example of the Civil War period and the history of Colt black powder revolvers.

The revolver is accompanied by its official French National Proof House (Saint-Étienne) Category D classification certificate.
