A fine representative of American firearms from the Wild West era, this 1892 Winchester Model 1873 chambered in .38-40 WCF remains in its original condition and still retains traces of its original factory bluing. A classic version highly sought after by collectors of Western firearms.

History

Succeeding the Model 1866, the Winchester Model 1873 marked a significant milestone in American firearms history with the adoption of the centerfire cartridge. Often referred to as "The Gun That Won the West," it became one of the defining symbols of the American frontier and remains closely associated with pioneers, cowboys, hunters, and law enforcement officers. Its success led to the production of more than 700,000 rifles until 1923. The Winchester 1873 was offered in a wide variety of calibers, configurations, and barrel lengths to meet the diverse needs of its users. Its widespread popularity and remarkable longevity have made it one of the most iconic models in both Winchester's history and 19th-century American firearms manufacturing.

Our Example

This Winchester Model 1873 Rifle in .38-40 WCF, manufactured in 1892, has remained in its original condition. The metal surfaces retain attractive traces of their original blued finish, now naturally aged to a pleasing patina. All markings are correct and clearly legible. The serial number 440XXX corresponds to manufacture in 1892. The wooden stocks are well preserved and display an even, attractive color. Two small holes are visible beneath the buttstock, likely intended for the attachment of a sling or carrying fixture. The original metal buttplate is present and correctly fitted.

The action operates smoothly with a strong, positive hammer strike. The 24-inch octagonal barrel, chambered in .38-40 WCF, features a very good light-gray bore with no visible damage, sharp rifling, and strong definition throughout.

Preserved in its original condition, this Winchester Model 1873 is an iconic piece from the American Frontier era and would make a natural addition to any collection of antique American firearms.

The firearm is accompanied by its official Category D(e) classification certificate, issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House (Banc National d'Épreuve de Saint-Étienne).
