History
When introduced, the Winchester Model 1873 provided an effective lever-action rifle for a wide range of hunting and Frontier applications. However, its available calibers were considered insufficient for certain uses requiring greater power, particularly hunting large game such as grizzly bears, longer-range shooting in open country and some military applications. Winchester therefore developed a larger lever-action rifle, which was presented at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of American independence. The new rifle was appropriately named the Winchester Centennial Model 1876.
Based on the successful Model 1873, the Model 1876 featured a larger receiver and heavier barrel, allowing it to handle more powerful cartridges. It was offered in several calibers, including .40-60 Winchester, and quickly became one of the most recognizable large-frame lever-action rifles of the American Frontier.
Today, the Model 1876 remains highly regarded by collectors for its association with the American West and its important place in the development of powerful American lever-action rifles.
Our Rifle
This Winchester Model 1876, manufactured in 1878, bears serial number 76XX, placing it within the early production period of the Centennial Model. Although its individual history is not documented, its early serial range makes it an interesting example of the first years of Model 1876 production.
The metal surfaces have undergone an old polishing, apparently carried out many years ago. This treatment has partially softened some of the original markings, although they remain visible and identifiable except the Winchester address . The metal surfaces display various signs of age together with an even patina. The wooden furniture retains an attractive coloration and remains well fitted to the receiver.
Mechanically, this Winchester lever-action rifle functions properly, with smooth and positive cocking. The 28-inch .40-60 Winchester barrel shows signs of use consistent with its age and retains wide, well-defined rifling characteristic of rifles from this period.
This early-production Winchester Model 1876 represents the large-frame lever-action rifles associated with the American Frontier and the history of the Old West.
