Winchester Repeating Arms – Model 1897 Takedown

Manufactured in 1911 – 12 Gauge – Untouched Condition, 28" Barrel

This 1911 Winchester Model 1897 Takedown retains its original finish, displaying an attractive tobacco-brown patina and well-preserved markings. As the takedown version of Winchester's iconic pump-action shotgun, it represents a configuration highly sought after by collectors of antique firearms.

History

Designed by John Moses Browning, the Winchester Model 1897 succeeded the Model 1893 and was specifically developed to handle the new smokeless powder cartridges. Introduced in 1897, it quickly gained popularity among hunters, law enforcement agencies, and military users. Featuring a pump-action mechanism and a five-round capacity, the Model 1897 became one of the most iconic manually operated repeating shotguns in American history. It is particularly renowned for its military service, notably as the "Trench Gun" during World War I, while the "Riot Gun" variant became widely associated with police use. One of the Model 1897's most distinctive features is its slam-fire capability, allowing rapid fire by holding the trigger while cycling the action. The Takedown version, which can be separated into two sections for easier transport and maintenance, remains one of the most practical and desirable variations of this legendary shotgun.

Our Example

This Winchester Model 1897 Takedown, manufactured in 1911, remains in very attractive original condition, retaining its factory finish and an even tobacco-brown patina throughout the metal surfaces. Markings are sharp and clearly legible. The serial number 523XXX, corresponding to 1911 production, is present on both sections of the firearm. The wood furniture retains an attractive original color. A hairline crack is present on each side of the buttstock, while the original hard-rubber buttplate still bears the Winchester logo.

Mechanically, the shotgun functions correctly. The action cycles smoothly, feeding is reliable, and ejection is strong. The slam-fire feature remains fully operational. The 28-inch barrel, chambered in 12 gauge, shows an almost mirror-bright bore with only light signs of use.

This untouched Winchester Model 1897 Takedown combines a highly desirable takedown configuration with honest original condition, making it an excellent representative example of America's early pump-action shotguns.

The firearm is accompanied by its official Category D(e) classification certificate issued by the Saint-Étienne National Proof House (Banc National d'Épreuve).
